Anemia Profile

If you're feeling unusually tired, weak, or pale, your provider may recommend this panel to check for anemia. It looks at your red blood cell counts (CBC) along with iron, vitamin B12, and folate levels, the nutrients your body needs to make healthy red blood cells and the most common causes of anemia when they run low.

Preparation

Fasting overnight (water only) and scheduling this test in the morning is recommended to get the most accurate iron results, but it isn't required for every part of this panel. If you take iron supplements, avoid them for 24 hours before your appointment for accurate iron levels. No preparation is needed for the CBC, vitamin B12, or folate portions of this test.

Overview

About This Test

Anemia happens when your body doesn't have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen through your tissues. This panel starts with a Complete Blood Count to look at the size, number, and health of your red blood cells, then checks iron levels and vitamin B12 and folate, two of the most common nutritional causes of anemia. Because B12 and folate deficiency can look similar to iron deficiency on a basic blood count, testing all of these together in one draw helps identify the actual cause, which affects how it's treated.

The Complete Blood Count checks the cells that make up your blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, to give a broad picture of your overall health. It's commonly used to screen for anemia, infection, and other blood-related conditions, or to help explain symptoms like fatigue, fever, or unusual bruising.
